2013 Harness Crash Test Videos

Thank you for reviewing our 2013 Harness Study Testing.  Please note that upon publication of the 2014 CPS Harness Safety Standard (output from our 2013 study) we launched the CPS Certified Program where you can now find our logo on brands that meet our rigorous testing and performance requirements.  You can find those products here:  CPS Certified Program

###

In July 2014, CPS published the CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Test Protocol and Rating Guidelines as an output from this testing.  With the exception of the Sleepypod Clickit Utility, the harness products tested in 2013 were deemed insufficient in design, materials and overall performance.  We do not agree with claims of crash protection made by these manufacturers.

To reduce the risk to you, your family members and your pet, It is important for the test dog to stay on the seat for the duration of the test.  We want to ensure the hardware, webbing, connection point and excursion thresholds are met – and help pet owners understand that extension tethers and zipline-style products increase the risk of injury.

Crash test dogs are specially designed, weighted and instrumented simulants.  No real dogs were used for crash testing.

Brands that did not pass preliminary testing (to qualify for crash testing):

  • USA K-9 Outfitters; Champion Harness.
  • In the Company of Animals; CLIX Car Harness
  • Coastal EZ Rider (Also Private Labeled under the  Petsmart Top Paw brand).
  • Snoozer Pet Safety Harness and Adapter

Brands that Qualified for Crash Testing – with only one brand offering crash protection.  Watch the videos below:

Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was within limits for sizes Small and Medium and was exceeded for size Large. Manufacturer attended testing and approved setup of all tests.

RC Pet Canine Friendly Crash Tested

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
RC Pet Canine Friendly Crash Tested – Exhibited hardware integrity problems, however, test dog did not launch off of the seat for sizes Small and Medium. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was within limits for sizes Small and Medium. Failure of size X-large met CPS Catastrophic Failure Definition. Manufacturer opted out of test attendance.

Klein Metal Allsafe

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
Allowed test dog to launch off of the seat risking secondary impact. Tether is adjustable. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) is exceeded for all sizes. Manufacturer attended testing and approved setup of all tests.

Ruff Rider

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
Allowed test dog to launch risking secondary impact. Tether is not adjustable. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was exceeded for all sizes. Manufacturer opted out of test attendance.

Bergan Car Harness

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
Exhibited severe harness deformation. Allowed dog to launch risking secondary impact. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was exceeded for small and medium sizes. Failure of size large met CPS Catastrophic Failure Definition. Manufacturer attended testing and approved setup of all tests.

Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
Exhibited tearing of neck strap and hardware deformation. Allowed dog to launch risking secondary impact. Head Excursion Measurement (FMVSS 213) was exceeded for medium size. Failure of size small and large met CPS Catastrophic Failure Definition. Manufacturer attended testing and approved setup of Medium and Large sizes. Due to harness sizing differences CPS created a 25 lb. test dog with a smaller profile and testing was completed at a later date.

IMMI Petbuckle

Exhibited a consistent failure of the stitching of the connection point. Failure of both sizes (under 20 lbs. and over 20 lbs.) met CPS Catastrophic Failure Definition. Manufacturer opted out of test attendance.
(Note: Yellow Tether is the instrumentation umbilical.)

Solvit Safety Harness (Original) – Catastrophic Illustrative Test

Does not meet performance requirements of CPS-001-014.01 Companion Animal Safety Harness Restraint System Standard.
This test was conducted to illustrate the crash protection offered by a product that would be considered a Distracted Driving Tether. The manufacturer did not claim testing. The manufacturer did not claim crash protection. The data returned from this test was not used – it is simply an illustrative test of crash protection that would be offered by most of the safety harnesses where the manufacturer makes no claims of testing.
